Do you know what food to eat at Anping Fort when you visit Tainan City?

#1 – Oysters 牡蠣
Tainan’s proximity to estuaries give the city an abundance of fresh oysters which are shucked fresh daily.
Fresh oysters are a must try as a food to eat at Anping Fort. There are plenty of stands and small restaurants to have a taste.
Either steamed or fried, or in a pancake, these fresh oysters are a Tainan specialty.

#2 – Shrimp Rolls 蝦卷

Shrimp rolls are the best in Tainan. Fresh shrimp, mixed with a sticky rice mixture, rolled together and then deep fried. (Also, can be done with oysters.) Gotta try them!
The Chen Family Shrimp Rolls (Chen Jia) have been around for decades. They have a large location at the old street entrance next to the Anping Fort. It’s located on Anbei Road 安北路 near the old street.

The food is so reasonably priced. 4 shrimp rolls for only 50NT. Also, fresh oysters, deep fried oysters, and oyster rolls are all cooked up fresh here.

#3 – Dou Hua 豆花
Dou Hua is basically a sweet tofu soup. It’s served cold, has a hunk of soft tofu with a sweet sugary syrup and a topping like red bean, green bean or peanuts. It can be found all over Taiwan but is quite famous in the Anping Fort area. Anping Dou Hua is the most famous shop.

This is a bowl of the red bean Dou Hua. It’s traditional and always good.

Other flavors include no topping, black bean, and green bean. Prices are around 30NT. The shop is located on Anbei Road # 433. 安平北路433號。

The line at Anping Dou Hua is usually long, but it moves quickly.

Once you’ve got your snack, just find a seat and start to enjoy!

#4 – Shrimp Crackers 蝦餅
As you walk around Anping old street (Yan Ping Street) and Anbei Road, you’ll see lots of vendors giving away free samples of shrimp crackers.These crunchy treats are made with rice and come in many kinds of flavors. They all have a distinct shrimp taste.

Not all the shrimp crackers look the same. So try a few and see which ones you like. You can buy them in large bags.

Shrimp, as with oysters, are a popular seafood in Tainan City at Anping Fort.

#5 – Chive/veggie fried pocket 韭菜盒
You won’t find many English write-ups for this small delicous treat. The Liu Ji chive/veggie pocket is located on Anbei Road #159( 安北路 159號) and serves up a unique Taiwan treat that is hot, oily, and crispy. The Mandarin is pronounced “Jiu Cai He”.

This pocket is filled with vegetables, including chives. They are wrapped and fried on a flat pan with oil. It’s a common snack in Taiwan, however, the taste at Liuji is quite special.

There is usually a long line, but it goes quickly. Opening hours are between 2:30-6:30.

It’s amazing that business here is so good, but the price is still very cheap. Just 25NT for a Jiu Cai He/Chive pocket.
