12 Great Pubs in Kaohsiung City

In Kaohsiung and want to grab a drink and hangout? In the mood for some good pub food? Here is a list of our top 12 favorite pubs in Kaohsiung City…

HANDMADE PIZZA SHOPS  IN KAOHSIUNG CITY

1) The Lighthouse Bar and Grill  燈塔美食酒館

Where: North Kaohsiung-Short walk from MRT R14 stop.

Food: Great selection of Chinese and Western Food. They are well known for their Chinese dishes. Great wings!

Drink Selecton: 3 beers on tap and as growing selection of bottled and craft beers. Mixed drinks are good. Look for the nightly shot specials.

Scene: Busy and lively. A mix of foreigners and Taiwanese. 25-40 something crowd. Great place to socialize and watch English Premier or Rugby.

*No Smoking

2) The Mercury  水星酒館水星酒館

Where: North Kaohsiung-Short walk from MRT R14 stop.

Food: Simple western pub food. However, the owner, Don, bottles his own scorpion chili sauce. Try the suicide wings if you dare.

Drink Selecton: Taiwan Beer on tap. Many bottled beers including a few craft beers. Decent mixed drinks.

Scene: Small personable place. Great to meet a few friends and talk. Concerts on the 2nd floor.

3) Western Cowboys Pub 西部牛仔

Where: Uptown (since 8/2015). Corner of Minzu Road and Tian Xiang Road.(at north end of Heti Park)

Food: Great Chinese food selections that are good to share with a few people.

Drink Selecton: Best mixed drinks in Kaohsiung. The owner, Johnson, has it all. Wines, whiskeys, strong mixed drinks. Normal bottled beer selection. Large scotch selection.

Scene: Very Taiwanese scene. Usually a 20-30s crowd. Nice bar to sit at if you are going solo.The new location is fresh and comfortable.

4) Bottoms Up

Where: Downtown near the Hanshen Hotel. Near to #12 Black Dog Pub. (good for a pub crawl)

Food:  A large menu of western pub food. Good wings.

Drink Selecton: A few beers on tap like Guiness and Hoogarden which come in big glasses. Normal selection of bottled beers.

Scene: A busy place with short term expats and visitors staying at the hotel. Service is good and the bar is a comfortable place to sit at. Fun place.

*No smoking.

5) Victory Inn 維克餐廳

Where: North Kaoshiung. Near R14 MRT stop.

Food: Decent pub food.

Drink Selecton: A few beers on tap and normal bottled beers. Good mixed drinks.

Scene: Nice big bar and open atmosphere. Plenty of space to hang and talk to friends. Mix of expats and Taiwanese.

6) Craft Beer 卡夫特精釀啤酒專賣店

Where: North Kaohsiung near the Costco on Da Shun Road.

Food: No food. Just a few crackers to snack on.

Drink Selecton: One of the only places to get cold draught craft beer. There are 2 taps that change weekly. An assortment of bottled and canned beer for immediate drinking or to go. Excellent selection and very knowledgeable staff.

Scene: People who like beer come here. It’s more of a shop than a pub, but there are tables to sit at and try all the kinds of beer you like. Prices are cheaper if you take the beers to go.  Customers are a mix of Taiwanese and expats. Vicky is the bosslady, and she can tell you about every beer she carries.

7) Zhangmen Brewery Craft Beers

The Taipei Zhangmen Brewery’s Kaohsiung location is near the Art Museum and carries 24 taps of freshly brewed craft beer. Craft beer lovers will love the variety.

8) Inyoung Hotel Rooftop Bar on Chijin Island  旗津道酒店

It’s technically not a pub, but if you like a great sunset and drinks on the roof, head out to Chijin Island and walk to the Inyoung Hotel. Head up to the 3rd floor from the elevator on the corner, then walk through the lobby to the other elevator and go up to the 4th floor. Great views of Kaohsiung City, Chijin Beach, and the sunset. It’s a gem of a place!!

The Inyoung Hotel is above the Qihou dry seafood market on Chijin’s main strip.

The elevator is on the corner of the hotel. Head to the 3rd floor and then change to the other elevator to the 4th floor roof.

9. 加楓二 Fh2 – Taphouse & Pizza Pub

Taphouse is the second restaurant from the owners of Foster Hewitt’s Pub. Taphouse has a wide menu of food choices including hand made pizza. It is one of the only places to get craft beer on tap. They also carry a selection of bottled craft beers. Taphouse has a few TVs and shows all the major sporting events. Great wings and burgers as well!

10) Foster Hewitt’s

Foster Hewitt’s is almost more known for its great burgers and wings than as a pub. Dinner times are busy and the food is good. Foster’s is located in the busy Zuoying District of Kaohsiung City near the Reifeng Night Market.

11) Black Dog Pub

The Black Dog Pub is a cozy, foreign owned pub located in a quiet alley in downtown Kaohsiung City. It is very near Bottoms Up, so a pub crawl is always possible. There are several beers on tap as well as a pub food menu. Open Mic nights (usually Thursdays) are really popular and fun. Check their Facebook Page for details.
