Xiao Liu Qiu Island–What to Eat
Ma Hua Lao-花麻荖
On Xiao Liu Qiu, visitors will see bags of Ma Hua Lao sold just about everywhere. Ma Hua Lao isn’t indigenous from the island, but it has been a chosen snack to be the product to buy. Ma Hua Lao are fried/baked dough twists that are sprinkled with flavorings.
The many flavors include, taro, caramel, seaweed, brown sugar, plum, black pepper, and chili pepper. Bags of the snack are 50NT and vendors usually let you try samples.
Flying Fish Sausages
Flying fish are a common catch around the islands of Taiwan. Flying Fish sausages are made with pork buy have the crunchy flying fish roe mixed inside. They taste great barbecued.
Some vendors will sell the entire flying fish deep fried.
Cuttlefish are a common catch around Taiwan. Taiwanese love to dry them, shred them, and then eat them as a snack. Below, dried cuttlefish pieces are heated up on a fire.

There is a lot of fresh seafood on the island. However, the fish come from the Dong Gang Hua Qiao fish market where fresh fish is unloaded daily from fishing boats.Although not caught on the island, the fish is still very fresh.
