Built by the Japanese in the early 1900’s, the Sanyi Long Sheng Broken Bridge, not broken then, was a major part of the Old Mountain Line Railroad used to ship wood products out of Miaoli County.

This remarkable bridge was built with the finest quality of bricks with just a small amount of steel rebar reinforcement.

However, a large earthquake in 1935 (The Guandao Mountain Earthquake), destroyed the bridge so badly, that there was no way to repair it.

What stands today are the large pillars of the bridge still intact. Visitors can walk among the ruins and appreciate the old craftsmanship.

A new bridge was later built to replace to brick structure. Visitors can walk up the stairs to the tracks. This railroad line was officially closed in 1998 when the 921 Earthquake caused irreparable damage.

Once at the bridge, you can park your car in the parking lot for a fee. If it isn’t busy, thought, just park on the side of the road and walk around for a bit. The area isn’t that big and can be a quick photo stop need be.
