The Kaohsiung Pier 2 Arts Center is the result of the Kaohsiung City government's plan to rejuventate the old and neglected harbor area of Yan Cheng District. The plan was started in 2000 by an artists group and has slowly grown into a must visit area of Kaohsiung City for locals and visitors.
The Arts Center consists of several old abandnoned warehouses that have been converted into exhibition space for artists and musicians. There are usually several exhibitions being held from Japanese Robot art to Star Trek. Some of these exhibitions are free and others require a ticket. Most exhibitions do a 3 month run.
In addition, some of the warehouse space has been turned into restaurants and cafe's. Pasadena at Pier 2 is an excellent Wood Fired Pizza/Grill restaurant that retained the warehouse/industrial design. It's worth a visit for some great pizza, burgers, beer, or just some bread from their bakery.
Every March, the Megaport Music Festival 大港開唱 is held at Pier 2. The two day shows draw both Taiwanese and international bands from Europe, Asia, and North America. The shows run all day and have mulitple stages. Megaport's popularity continues to grow.
An additional feature of the Pier 2 Arts Center is the bike path that runs directly through it. The path is part of the network that connects the harbor to the Xiziwan Harbor area. Bikers can enjoy a walk or ride along the harbor and old railroad tracks. There are great views of the city as well as the water front and there are lots of places to stop for a cold drink or a snack. Locals and visitors mingle here especially late afternoon when the weather begins to cool and dusk sets in.
