Phonics - Teach and Practice Short and Long Vowels

Age Group: Elementary
Subject: Phonics
Goal of Lesson: Learn how to sound out short and long vowel words
Time Needed: 20 Minutes
Materials Needed: whiteboard or vowel flashcards

* I like to create flashcards with a vowel and then the many endings. For example, I have a set of short “A” cards like this: (at, am, ab, as, ack, amp, an, ap, etc.) I use these cards on the whiteboard with magnets. BUT, if you don’t have these flashcards, you can write the endings on the board.

  1. Introduce and write on the board phonics you want to introduce. For example,  short A.
  2. Repeat the sound of short a several times and have your class repeat it back to you.
  3. Next, go around to every student and listen for their pronunciation of the sound. Correct them if you have to.
  4. Next, place your flashcards in a column on the whiteboard. If you don’t have the endings cards, write the endings in a column or 2 on the board.
  5. Then, say and repeat each of the endings with your class. Ask, many students to individually practice their pronunciation.
  6. Next, choose a consonant and write it on the board in front of the flashcards. For example, “t”.
  7. Show the students how to sound out the word with the “t” + endings. For example: “ T—ap…Tap”  “T-an…Tan”. Go down the entire list with your class.
  8. CHANT: Start clapping your hands or tapping a book to begin a chanting rhythm. Then begin reading the words in a chant. “T—ap, Tap…T-an …Tan, T—ab, Tab” . Go down your list until you are done. Then change the consonant from T to another like B. Start the chant again.
  9. Do multiple chants with multiple consonants. You can call students to individually read.
