Race to the Middle is a fun phonics game that challenges students to recognize and say the phonics sounds they are learning more quickly.

The first thing to do is set up your phonics cards on a table or write them on the white board like below:

mat

bag

ham

af

lag

sas

sad

tab

tax

map

fan

Next, find 2 players. 1 player will start reading from the right side "an". The other player will start reading from the left side "at".

When the teacher says, "GO", the 2 students start reading towards the middle "an, ap, ax, ab"  and "at, ag, am , af".

When the students meet, the teacher stops the round.

Next the students do "Rock, Paper Scissors". The loser must sit. But the winner can play the next round. HOWEVER, he can start from the place he won the game. The losing team must start at the end.

Keep playng this way until one team has "pushed" all the way to the other ends first card. They are then the winning team.
