Phonics - Practicing Listening and Putting Together Short and Long Vowel Words

Age Group: Elementary
Subject: Phonics
Goal of Lesson: Students can practice listening, writing out and pronouncing new vowel words
Time Needed: 20 Minutes
Materials Needed: white board or black board
  1. Separate your class into 2 teams or groups.
  2. Review the phonics sounds you have learned. Eg. short A or short E
  3. On the top half of the board, write many endings with your vowel sound. For example, AT, AB, AN, AM, AS, AD, AF , ACK, AMP, ET, ES, EM, EN, EP…..
  4. On the bottom half of the board, draw a line down the middle.
  5. Choose a student from each team to come to the board on either side of the line. Say a word that includes one of the endings on the board. Eg. “MAT”. Repeat the words 2-3 times.
  6. The students must listen and write out the word they hear.  Then they must spell it out loud and say it to the teacher.  Whoever is first wins and gets a point for their team.
  7. Then change players.
  8. Play many rounds so all students have several chances to practice.
  9. Game should be fast paced but also clear so students can practice their listening and reading skills.
