|Age Group:||Elementary, Junior High School|
|Goal of Lesson:||students practice listening, speaking, writing, and team work skills|
|Time Needed:||20-30 minutes|
|Materials Needed:||prepared 5-7 sentences stories or passages|
I have an advanced level class of 5th graders. I like to challenge them with this activity so they can practice many skills at the same time.
First, I separate the class into pairs or groups of 3.
Next, I prepare a short story of 5-7 sentences that uses the vocabulary we have been working on.
Next, I designate one student in each group to be a writer. They have a pencil and piece of paper ready.
I designate another student to be the listener and the speaker.
The listener and the speaker go outside with me.
I tell them the story 3-4 times. When they are ready, they must go back into the classroom and tell the writer the same story.
If the student forgets some parts of the story, he/she can go out and ask me to read it again.
The activity ends when everyone is finsihed writing.
I then read the stories the students have written outloud to the class. Sometimes they are funny, and sometimes they are almost perfect. I point out vocabulary and spelling mistakes.
Next, we play again. The writers change, the speakers change and the story changes.
It's a fun activity and the teacher is not the central figure. Students must work together.
