I Spy is an old game that can still be an effective classroom activity to influence students to speak. It works for many levels.

The teacher starts by telling the class "I spy something that is red" . This is a basic sentence for young learners, however, teachers can also add in grammar like. "I spy a NOUN." or "I spy an ADJECTIVE."

The students then ask " Is it a book?" "Is it a chair?". etc. The teacher will continue calling on each student in the class until one of the students guesses correctly.

The student who guesses correctly then comes to the front of the classroom and takes the teacher's role. The student then can spy something and have his/her classmates guess.

Another variation is to say " I spy with my little eye something that begins with the letter A,B,C etc."

Teachers can adapt the activity to the ages and levels of their class.
