Taipei 101 Building

For the moment, the world’s tallest building resides here in Taipei. With its height of over 500 meters and 100 stories, the tower has surpassed both the Sears tower in Chicago and the Petronas tower in Malaysia. It was designed by C.Y. Lee & Partners and constructed by KTRT joint venture, and it opened on December 31st, 2004 to a huge crowd and enormous New Year’s Eve fireworks show. Its name is officially the Taipei International Financial Center, but is always referred to as Taipei 101 because of its 101 floors. Surely a landmark skyscraper.

The inside of Taipei 101 itself is home to a six-floor mall, nightclubs, restaurants, offices, apartments, and observation decks on the 89th and 91st floors. Visitors are given the option of touring the magnificent building, and it said to attract 5000 foreign and Taiwanese per day.

The outside of the structure was designed to give the appearance of financial success. Its bamboo-like exterior is used to represent gold ingots which were used as currency by ancient Chinese royalty. Taipei 101’s exterior glass is also tinted green for this same reason.

Some facts:

  • Tallest building in the world (likely until 2008 when Buri Dubai is opened)
  • Contains a steel pendulum 4 stories in length to counteract wind gusts and shakes from earthquakes. Two smaller “tuned mass dampers” are also located in the building
  • There are 5 sub-level floors below the ground floor of Taipei 101
  • Contains the fastest elevator in the world (traveling at over 60kmph)
  • 2004 winner of the Emporis Skyscraper Award
  • Largest Count-Down clock on New Year’s Eve
  • There is a plaque over the main door that urges visitors to come and go as they please
  • The building was designed in strict consultation with a Fueng-Shui master.
  • Cost–1.6 Billion USD
