Tainan-The Oldest City In Taiwan

Tainan is a well-known historic and ancient city, preserved many important cultural relics and places of historic interest. It boasts a population of over 1.8 million people. Like other Taiwanese cities, most people in Tainan, including taxi drivers, cannot speak English very well (except for middle grade, high school and college students) There are 166 temples and monasteries and more than 40 Christian and Catholic churches in the city. "There is a God every five steps and a temple at three", as the metaphor goes. Over 70 places are classified as first, second and third-grade places of historic interest, such as to the God of War, Chiqian Mansion, Anping Castle, Confucian Temple, Temple and Da Tian Hou Palace, etc. Tainan is the oldest city in Taiwan and was the capital during imperial times. It is famous for its temples, historic buildings and snack food. The city is currently the fifth largest city on the island after New Taipei, Kaohsiung (Gaoxing), Taichung and Taipei .

For a city of its size by population, Tainan's size by land area is exceptional though some of the older generation can converse in Japanese. However, to help visitors get around, there are free tri-lingual (Chinese, English and Japanese) map-guides available at the railway station.
One of the most popular destinations in the Tainan area is the Anping District (安平區; Ānpíng qū). The Anping District is the historical heart of Tainan, the original capital of Taiwan. Anping is home to the Anping Old Fort (安平古堡; Ānpíng gu bǎo), the Anping Tree House (安平樹屋 Ānpíng shù wū) (a warehouse with massive banyan trees growing all around and out of itself), and numerous restaurants and food stalls.

Chikan Tower remains to be one of the most visited tourist landmarks in Tainan. Chikan Tower was constructed by the Dutch in 1653. The Duitch first called it Orlande, changed it to Fort Zeelandia, It became Anping Castle when it was the home of Zheng Chenggong (Koxinga). After that, the Japanese called it the Old Dutch Fort just as they were demolishing what was leftover from after decades of neglect. They then rebuilt the fort , and renamed it Anping Fort. It means ‘eternity’ in Dutch. It is one of Taiwan’s major tourist attractions. The focus of any visit to Anping is the old For Anping Fort is built on the foundations of the Dutch stronghold named Fort Zeelandia. That fort was the anchor point of early settlements in Tainan for both the Chinese and the Dutch. and much of the settlement’s history lies in Anping’s old streets surrounding the fort.
The KMT began development of the tourist site you see now Identified as Provintia during the early years, but was renamed ‘The Tower Of The Red Haired Barbarians" or " The Tower of Savages’ by the Han Chinese. When the Dutch were repelled in 1661 by the famous Chinese general, Cheng Chengkung , Chikan Tower was made the mansion of the Chentien governor. During the period of the Japanese colonization, it was used as a hospital for the army and later became popular for hosting the worship for Guanshihyin Budda.

Chikan Tower has been a significant administration center of Tainan ever since the Dutch invaded the country and even though the tower has been through various Chinese rules such as the Ching and Ming Dynasties and Japanese Colonization Period . Most original architectural features can be witnessed even today which makes it a sought after tourist attraction in the region. This iconic site is hugely popular for its wonderful and beautiful sunset views by night. ‘The sunset in Chikan Tower’ is amongst Taiwan’s eight best and most famous scenic view.

One of the most astonishing at the tower is the nine stone statues of turtles that are carrying plates. It is believed that these statues were made elsewhere during the Ching Dynasty and then were later moved to the Chikan Tower. The stone statue of a horse with broken legs is also a famous attraction here.
Since Zhen expelled the Dutch from Taiwan, the salt industry became a vital industry on the southwest coast of Taiwan. Beautiful salterns was once the collective memory of the Taiwanese people. In May, 2002, because of the high cost of production, TAIYEN had to close all its salterns Salt industry thus became a big part of Taiwan history.

The displays at this landmark include camphor-wood carvings which depicting plague gods of different places and folks arts groups touring the domains of their temples, as well as instruments and implements used in plague-god-boat ceremonies along with items of everyday use. By visiting and enjoying the display, visitors can understand the members beliefs and the meaning behind the ceremonies. Besides, its displays also represent the allusion and image of the eighteen brave men in Shui-Hu-Zhuan, and their legendary teaching materials

Take the No.17 Provincial Highway and turn west on No. 174 County Highway . Or get off Zhongshan Expressway at Matou Interchange and turn west on No. 174 County Highway.
Option 2 : Connect to No. 1 National Highway from Shueishang System of No. 3 National Highway, and get offZhongshan Expressway at Matou Interchange, change to No.172 Provincial Highway , and connect to No.163 County Highway to No.17 Provincial Highway toward Beimen.

Or connect to No. 1 National Highway from Shueishang System of No. 3 National Highway, and get off Zhongshan Expressway at Matou Interchange, change to No.172 Provincial Highway , and connect to No.163 County Highway to No.17 Provincial Highway toward Beimen. By Bus: Take Singnan Bus Jiali Line to Sanliaowan Bus Station at Tainan County railway station.
Salt Mountain
Cigu Saltern was the youngest saltern which was managed by Japanese companies and the Nationalist government, it became the largest saltern, and was once an important supplier of industrial salt. Since than, the salt industry diminished sharply. Lots of money and human resources have been dedicated to build a Taiwan Salt Museum and traditional materials in salt industry to design this park.

This park there boasts two Salt Mountains Looking like a giant rock standing in a desert,: the highest peak of Salt Mountain, and the north peak of Salt Mountain, which used to be the piling space of Cigu Saltern was once the last place to dry the salt of Cigu Saltern, It consists of around 60 thousand tons of salt. The peak have been naturally crystallized over time with the dust in the air to form a rigid surface. it has become the landmark of Cigu. The salt on the north peak is from western Australia, produced by one of our overseas joint salterns. As the material of our salt shatter factory, it is snowy white. The shape of the mountain changes as the salt flows. Stepping to the top, you will have an unforgettable experience to feel as if you were in a snowy northern country.
