The first impressions most people usually have after arriving in Taiwan are of the cluttered roads filled with cars, taxis, scooters and people. Then they experience the over-crowded, neon-lit streets at night and the chaotic activities at night markets and bustling side-streets and alleys. Taiwan, of course, has much more to offer than just the hectic life of the big city. See for yourself. Browse our Travel Pages and check out a few of the many useful links.
Whether you are looking for relaxation on the many local beaches or wanting to take in the majestic views of the sheer mountain peaks rising over the rolling basins of the Taiwan countryside, or just seek out an ancient temple in the sparsely populated mystic wilderness, Taiwan has it all. You will probably never run out of things to see and do and you will be taking countless beautiful pictures.
Complementing this variety is the dynamic between the city and the counties that invites you to drive along the never ending stretches of coastal and interior scenic highways. The fascinating rock formations on land and in the coastal waters is indeed both tropical and temperate. Taiwan is famous for its massive network of highways and roads and they will let you get almost anywhere within a few hours.
And there are stark sequences of population density: from the shoulder to shoulder crowds of the famous Shilin (Shihlin, 士林) Night Market in Taipei to Taichung's biggest market, Feng Jia, on a Saturday night. The sheer humanity of these places will take you to heights of pure astonishment. The big cities offer an endless amount of things to do and places to see.
But when you need a break from the concrete jungle and crave Mother Nature, there’s always plenty of surprising, wide open space within a reasonable distance from the crowded cities, which is another reason to check out our links.
How about that famous Taiwanese food, you say? Try some favoured unique foods that are famous in each city such as the little town of Puli, just three hours from Taipei near Sun Moon Lake. Puli is famous for its paragliding and winery, which is also a cultural monument. Its purpose is two-fold: to distinguish Puli as the local birthplace of Shaohsing Wine (紹興酒), and to remember the township’s history. It is also the geographical center of Taiwan with a plaque commemorating the exact spot.
