and ‘perform' on religious occasions.

While possessed Tang-ki usually engage in macabre displays
of self-mutilation.

Performances include: singing, dancing, inhaling incense, cleansing,
fire walking, climbing sword ladders, and, most commonly, self-flagellation.

That the Tang-ki seem to feel no pain when they mutilate their bodies, their wounds don’t
become infected, and the wounds heal quickly are all seen as evidence of divine intervention.

When flagellating Tang-ki most often hit their upper back and less
frequently their forehead.

Tang-ki use 6 tools: 1) octagonal spiked stick, 2) axe, 3) red mace (also known as the
“heavenly red tangerine”), 4) sword, 5) swordfish nose, 6) long knitting-like needles.

Most Tang-ki make very little money. Though there are more now
than in the past, there are few professional Tang-ki.

Tang-ki fill the role personal and religious advisor, as people come to
Tang-ki to speak to a god about their problems.

Tang-ki are low-level mediums. They are usually only possessed by one spirit
or god and have little control over the possession.

gods – can earn exorbitant amounts of money up to NT$10,000, or more, for one job.
